A bit guard (also known as a cheek guard) are a specialty piece of english tack, usually made of flexible rubber which help to keep the horse "off the sides of the bit". They have also been seen in gel or leather models as well. Bit guards are used with loose ring snaffle bits, gag bits and pelham bits. Bit guards are used in show jumping or schooling and they are not permitted in competitive dressage or huntseat competition.
** Reasons for using a bit guard include:
- to protect the horse's lips from chaffing or pinching by the bit rings
- to provide a better fit when the bit is too wide for the horse's mouth
- to prevent the bit rings from being pulled through the horse's mouth (as with babies)
** How to Apply Bit Guards: A pair of bit guards is placed on a bit by stretching them to pass over one bit ring. Then the bit is attached to the bridle. When the bridle is put on, the bit guards lie outside of the horse's mouth.
