The Eggbutt Copper Mouth Snaffle is a gently shaped snaffle bit with full copper mouthpiece. Ths bit is great for young horses while it encourages salivation to keep the horse's mouth soft and moist. Comes with 2" rings and a 18mm mouth.
** History: The eggbutt bits are probably the most widely used snaffle bit.
The name comes from the somewhat egg-shaped connection between the
mouthpiece and the bit rings. The
main benefit of the eggbutt shape is that the chance of the lip being
pinched between the mouthpiece and bit ring is lessened. The mouthpiece itself widens out at the sides, and the joint
between the mouthpiece and the ring is distanced from the horse's lips.
This eggbutt shape makes the bit less mobile than a loose-ring snaffle.
The mouthpiece doesn't move quite so much in the horse's mouth. Eggbutt
snaffles also come with a variety of mouthpieces. The first snaffles were only a mouth piece
that rings were attached to. However, today the "Eggbutt" has
eliminated much of the pinching of the ring snaffle. With the Eggbutt bit there is no ring to pass through the mouthpiece. Snaffle bits generally employ a lifting action, up
wards against the corners of the mouth or lips. The primary emphasis is
to produce flexion at the poll. The purpose of the snaffle was to
raise the head, neck and shoulders prior to providing a suitable base
for the curb to do it's job.
