Make sure that your jacket fits you well as a wrinkly, over-sized jacket will look sloppy. Jackets in the hunter ring are very conservative. The classic color is navy blue for hunters & equitation, however, grey & tan are also common. Black is a more formal color and tends to come & go. You will see plaid patterns & stripes in some coats.
For a hunter classic or stakes class, a shadbelly is appropriate but not mandatory. If you choose to wear a shadbelly, you will need to use a stock tie over your show shirt. Shadbellies are too formal of a choice and not used for regular hunter classes.
Jumper riders can choose any color for your show jacket. Common colors are navy blue, black and grey. Jackets can be customized with colored piping and different designs in the fabric. Try to stay away from jackets that make you look like you belong to a national team unless you really do! Members of the USET team are allowed to wear scarlet jackets identifying their membership and skill.
