Hunter riders should wear field boots. There is no way to go wrong with field boots and dress boots are rarely seen anymore. Black, tall, laced instep field boots with zippers up the back have become the boot of choice. Be certain to fit new boots about 1" taller than the leg length to allow for the drop in height as the boots break in and wrinkle around the ankle. Boots should be cleaned and polished before you enter the ring for either hunters or jumpers.
The Jumper Ring:
Field boots (the tall boots with laces in front) are the best choice for the jumper ring, but you are allowed to wear dress boots instead. You may also wear leather half chaps with paddock boots, which are seen in some jumper classes, but this is not the dressiest choice. You will always see tall boots in the money classes and more prestigious jumper classes.
